The library at Berlin Elementary School was dedicated to Clarence A Pike, the Berlin resident who donated the land on which the school was built. Mr. Pike always took an active interest in the school at Berlin and up until the school moved into this building would often come in to run the projector when teachers wanted to show movies.

The designers of the school planned an outstanding space for a library showing their respect for books as part of the educational process. It is an open space located in the heart of the school, surrounded by eight classrooms and the school offices. There are no doors to shut the library away from the rest of the school and six of the classrooms have sliding wooden panels that can be opened making the library an extension of the classroom. Most of the furniture in the library can be moved within ten minutes so that the space can be used for many other functions.

Patrons

While the library collection is primarily designed for the students and staff of the school we welcome family and community patrons. Parents who want books available in the home are encouraged to borrow book collections as are community home-schoolers.

Students are allowed to sign out books for one week or until their next library class (when a vacation comes between library classes). Staff can keep books as long as they need them and families can keep them as long as they need them or until the end of the year unless a teacher needs a material for curricular reasons.

Parents should be aware of library times for their children to help them get books back to the library on library day. Students who do not bring back books cannot sign out a new book. We do give them a note to take home to their family and let them select a book to save that can be signed out when the book is returned. If you know that book cannot be returned on library day, a note from a parent ensures that the child can sign out a book. Even better, if a parent who is in school tells me that they know the book is missing the student can sign out a book.
